Pre- and Post-Travel Exams

Many destinations in the developing world have their own risks with infectious disease outbreaks, poor water or unsanitary conditions. Travel MedKit

Our Travel nurse has assembled the Travel MedKit with supplies for travel to developing regions. It is the ultimate companion for international travel whether it be business-related, a raft trip down the Amazon or a safari into the African bush. It is compact, efficient and lightweight and fits neatly into any backpack or travel case. Essential items in the kit include insect repellent, anti-diarrheals, pain relievers, wound care and many other items which are non-existent in remote areas.

Whatever your destination, the best possible pre-travel preparation is essential to protecting your health while away. Some vaccines are compulsory, and you will have difficulty crossing borders without correct documentation.

Travellers immunized against yellow fever are issued with an internationally recognized vaccination certificate for inspection by immigration officials. The international health regulations concerning yellow fever are unequivocal, and unvaccinated travellers may face denial of entry, or even quarantine in certain circumstances. To be effective the vaccine should be administered 7-10 days prior to departure .

This strict control is maintained to ensure that both the individual traveller and the broader communities are protected against outbreaks of this disease. Travellers to yellow fever areas should be vaccinated for their own personal protection. Travellers from yellow fever areas should have been vaccinated to prevent the spread of the infection into the broader community in their home countries.

Many countries currently free of yellow fever have mosquitoes that are potentially capable of transmitting the disease. South Africa is home to such mosquito species, but remains free of yellow fever. The vaccine provides immunity against the disease for 10 years.

Recommended Vaccines
All travellers to developing parts of the world should have protection against hepatitis-A. Others may need typhoid, Rabies and hepatitis-B. Travellers over 65 years, and those With chronic medical problems, are generally recommended Pneumonia vaccine before any overseas trip. Travellers who visit high risk areas may be recommended vaccines such As, meningitis, Japanese encephalitis, tick borne encephalitis or rarely cholera.

WHY SHOULD YOU VACCINATE AGAINST YELLOW FEVER?
Yellow Fever is a virus originally common to primates in Africa & South America. This virus is spread by the Yellow
Fever mosquito, which is still found in South Africa due to the favorable climate. It is imperative that we prevent the spread of this deadly disease and can achieve this by enforcing border controls preventing infected people, travelling from areas where there is a threat, from coming to South Africa, without a valid Yellow Fever certificate, as proof that they have been vaccinated and are not carriers of the disease.

Sadly there is no cure or treatment for Yellow Fever. Prevention is only treatment therefore vaccinate!

MALARIA PREVENTION
Mosquito’s are much more than just an irritating little flying bug. This Fem Fatalis considered one of the most dangerous creatures on this planet because of their ability to spread deadly diseases with a single bite. Malaria is caused by a parasites picked up by a mosquito feeding on infected humans and is then passed on when this mosquito injects its saliva while feeding on another human. Once these parasites are in the human body, they migrate to the liver where they grow and multiply.

Eventually these parasites enter the blood stream to continue developing and multiplying, ultimately destroying blood cells. Depending on the duration of the travel, Malaria Pills – either Malanil, Mefliam or Doxicycline will be prescribed. Contrary to the “old wife’s tale”, malaria prophylaxis & malaria pills don’t mask the symptoms of malaria, they prevent the infection. Rapid result malaria test kits are also available. These screening tests are approved by the World Health Organisation, are 100% accurate on a negative test and takes only 10 minutes. Coartem tablets are used for the treatment of malaria.
